Did you know?

  • Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. When water passes through land and waterways, it picks up toxins, drugs, chemicals and harmful metals.
  • Around 70% of the industrial waste is dumped into the water bodies where it pollutes our drinkable water supply.
  • Although waterways have the ability to dilute hazardous pollution, they cannot totally eliminate contaminants. Thus, we rely on our water treatment plants to make our water supply ‘drinkable’.
  • Water treatment plants remove a great deal of pollution. However, due to economical reasons, trace amounts of hazardous contaminants are allowed to be present in our drinking water. Even at legal allowable levels, drinking trace amounts of harmful toxins have been linked to numerous life threatening diseases.
  • Once the water leaves the treatment plant it passes through our aging water infrastucture. Older water pipes still contain lead, a poisonous metal. Lead can cause a range of health effects including behavioural problems and learning disabilities in young children.
